LG’s display unit creates a 12-inch high-resolution stretchy display, which is said to be the world’s first of its kind.
Because of the technology, the display can be stretched, folded, and twisted without distorting it or causing wrinkles or other damage.
According to the company, the film-type substrate for stretchy display was created using specialised silicon materials similar to those used in contact lenses.
LG Display anticipates that the stretchy display will be used in a variety of industries, including fashion, wearables, mobility, and gaming.
The stretchy display’s resolution is maintained by LEDs 40 micrometers or smaller used as the light source.
The company’s new Stretchable display is the first in the industry to achieve 20% stretch ability, 100ppi resolution, and full-colour RGB. Furthermore, its high flexibility, durability, and dependability maximise its commercialization potential.
Based on a highly resilient film-type substrate made of special silicon used in contact lenses, this 12-inch display has the flexibility of a rubber band and can be stretched up to 14 inches.
The free-form nature of the display provides a cutting-edge solution that outperforms existing foldable and roll able technology.
LG Display explained that the internal circuitries are also designed like springs rather than straight lines to allow for bending and folding.
The invention is the result of a multi-year R&D effort led by LG and funded by Korea’s Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy. The project is scheduled to be finished by the end of 2024.
