As from July 1, “students of the male sex shall not compete on a team designated for students of the female sex,” according to the new law for transgenders.
The Republican governor of Wyoming did not veto legislation that would have prohibited transgender people from participating on girls’ or women’s sports teams, making Wyoming the nineteenth state to do so.
Governor Mark Gordon permitted the bill to become law on Friday without his signature, saying he supported the general aim of gender equality in athletic competition. In his written judgement, he argued that the restriction “is unduly severe, is discriminatory without attention to individual situations or mitigating factors, and pays little attention to fundamental principles of equality.”
As on July 1, “students of the male sex shall not compete on a team designated for students of the female sex,” according to the new law. There have been dozens of Republican proposals introduced in state legislatures across the United States that seek to push back against transgender rights, such as banning gender-affirming care for minors, restricting drag shows, and preventing transgender people from using restrooms, locker rooms, and other facilities associated with their gender identities.
He explained that the goal was to make trans individuals invisible and shut them out of public life altogether. All school sports should adhere to the principle of having inclusive teams that welcome all athletes and actively promote their involvement.
The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) condemns the new transgender law by saying that it is unconstitutional
The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) has said that the new law is unconstitutional and violates the Civil Rights Act, but it has not said whether or not it will sue over the matter. The director of Wyoming Equality, the largest LGBTQ advocacy organisation in the state, Sara Burlingame, recently told the Casper Star-Tribune that a lawsuit is in the works, and that Wyoming Equality has reached out to local and national groups to see if they are interested in joining the action.
The measure specifies that a five-member school activity panel will decide on an individual basis if transgender pupils are entitled to play in gender-designated sports that do not correspond to their birth-assigned sex if the law is temporarily delayed due to a suit.
