Pakistan Says It Downed 25 Indian Drones After Attacks Escalate Tensions

Pakistan’s military claims it intercepted and destroyed 25 Indian drones entering its airspace. The escalation follows Indian airstrikes on Pakistani territory. Major General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry, Pakistan’s military spokesperson, stated Indian-made Israeli Harop drones targeted cities like Karachi and Lahore. He warned India would “pay dearly” for its aggression, reporting one civilian death and four injured soldiers.

India’s Response to Pakistani Actions

India’s Defence Ministry said it countered Pakistani attempts to attack military targets in northern and western regions. It claimed to have neutralized threats targeting Pakistani air defense systems. Sixteen fatalities were reported due to Pakistani retaliation. The statement followed India’s precision strikes on alleged “terrorist infrastructure” inside Pakistan, with unverified claims of 100 militants killed. Pakistan reported 31 civilian deaths from Indian attacks.

Modi Reaffirms National Security Commitment

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a high-level meeting, emphasizing national security and operational readiness. His office stated ministries were prepared for emerging threats. The meeting followed intensified clashes along the Line of Control (LoC), the de facto Kashmir border. Al Jazeera’s Neha Poonia reported rapid deterioration, with heavy cross-border engagements between the two armies.

Civilian Casualties and Displacement

The Indian army confirmed 13 civilian deaths, 59 injuries, and one soldier killed in recent exchanges. Villages near the LoC have emptied, with residents fleeing or taking shelter in bunkers. Poonia noted unprecedented civilian displacement, unseen in years. The conflict has disrupted daily life, with many fearing further escalation. The humanitarian toll continues to rise as hostilities persist.

Airport Closures Disrupt Travel

Amid rising tensions, 20 airports in northern India shut down until at least May 10, severely impacting travel and commerce. Pakistan also closed Karachi airport until 6 PM GMT, with Islamabad and Lahore airports briefly suspended for operational reasons. The closures reflect heightened security concerns as both nations brace for potential further conflict. Air travel disruptions add to growing economic and logistical challenges.

International Concerns Over Escalation

The ongoing clashes between nuclear-armed neighbors have alarmed global observers. Diplomatic efforts to de-escalate remain critical, yet neither side shows signs of backing down. The risk of broader conflict looms, with civilian and military casualties mounting. The international community urges restraint, fearing catastrophic consequences if hostilities spiral further out of control.

Conclusion

The downing of drones and retaliatory strikes mark a dangerous escalation between India and Pakistan. With civilian suffering increasing and military engagements intensifying, the situation remains volatile. Both nations must prioritize dialogue to avert further devastation. The world watches anxiously, hoping for a peaceful resolution before the crisis deepens.
