PTA Issues 4G LTE Advisory to Fix Poor Call Quality

The 4G LTE advisory from the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) gives every mobile user in Pakistan a simple checklist to fix poor call quality on their own. The telecom regulator has issued an official public advisory urging mobile phone users to check their handsets and SIM cards for 4G/LTE compatibility. The move comes as complaints about dropped calls and unclear voice keep growing across the country.

Why PTA Released This 4G LTE Advisory Now

This advisory did not come out of nowhere. Pakistan’s network quality data tells a difficult story. Pakistan’s cellular mobile operators have failed to meet several prescribed quality benchmarks, with mobile broadband emerging as the most significant area of concern, according to PTA’s independent Quality of Service survey for Q2 2026.

While operators showed high compliance in several areas, persistent shortcomings in mobile broadband performance brought overall compliance to just 85 percent. Voice services reached 92 percent compliance. That means roughly one in twelve voice calls is failing a regulatory benchmark somewhere in the country.

Parliament has also taken notice. During a committee meeting chaired by Syed Amin-ul-Haq, lawmakers questioned PTA over what they viewed as inadequate improvement despite repeated regulatory action against telecom operators. PTA officials acknowledged that mobile and internet service quality remains a serious problem in different parts of Pakistan.

There is a geographic dimension too. KP, Balochistan, and Gilgit-Baltistan are hit hardest. Coverage in hill stations and key intercity routes has become a national embarrassment, and all major operators have failed minimum 4G confidence thresholds on critical stretches including the Murree Expressway and the Abbottabad, Khanpur road.

What the 4G LTE Advisory Tells Users to Do

PTA’s advice is practical and does not require a technician. There are three things to check, in order.

Step 1: Turn on the 4G/LTE Mode in Settings

PTA advises consumers to open their phone’s network settings and ensure the 4G/LTE option is enabled. Effective internet and seamless call quality require this specific network configuration. Many low-cost Android phones ship with the network mode set to 2G or 3G by default, which instantly degrades voice clarity even where 4G towers are available.

On most Android phones, go to Settings > Mobile Network > Preferred Network Type and select 4G/LTE or LTE/3G/2G (auto). On iPhones, go to Settings > Mobile Data > Mobile Data Options > Voice & Data and pick LTE.

Step 2: Check That Your Phone Supports 4G

If adjusting settings does not resolve the problem, PTA asks users to verify their physical hardware. You must ensure your mobile phone actually supports 4G services. Older or very cheap handsets may be 3G-only. You can check by searching your phone model online and looking at its spec sheet, or by dialling your operator’s helpline.

Step 3: Confirm Your SIM Is 4G-Ready

Users should confirm their SIM card’s status by contacting their mobile operator and asking if the SIM currently supports 4G. PTA states that combining a compatible handset, a 4G-ready SIM, and correct network settings directly improves overall network performance. SIM cards older than a few years may need a free upgrade at any operator service centre.

The Bigger Picture: Operators Still Falling Short

PTA’s advisory puts responsibility on users, but the regulator has not let operators off the hook. PTA has imposed financial penalties totaling Rs3.41 billion on telecom operators for failing to comply with prescribed service quality standards over the last four years. The authority also issued 20 warning letters and 86 Show Cause Notices to telecom operators as part of its enforcement measures.

The gap between operators is real and measurable. Jazz recorded the highest overall compliance in Q2 2026, meeting 130 of 132 assessed KPIs. Zong followed with 128 compliant KPIs. Ufone met 121 benchmarks, while Telenor recorded the lowest overall compliance, meeting 112 indicators and missing 20.

One technology makes a clear difference. Operators leveraging LTE Carrier Aggregation and VoLTE consistently delivered better results in both speed and call stability, signalling a clear advantage for networks investing in advanced infrastructure upgrades. VoLTE (Voice over LTE) routes voice calls over the 4G data network instead of the older circuit-switched system, which produces noticeably cleaner audio.

For broader context on how Pakistan’s telecom sector is being shaped by regulatory disputes, see our earlier coverage on telecom competition rules stuck between MoITT and CCP, which explains why regulatory coordination matters for consumers.

What Happens If the Problem Continues?

This PTA advisory helps consumers fix poor call quality and common network issues themselves. As a result, users can resolve basic connectivity problems before calling their mobile operators for technical support. But if your call quality stays poor after following all three steps, you have options: file a complaint directly on the PTA official website through the Consumer Support portal, or contact your operator’s helpline. PTA is legally required to follow up on complaints under the Consumer Protection Regulations.

With complaints continuing, a parliamentary committee decided to summon representatives of Jazz, Zong, and Ufone to explain why consumers keep facing network failures and what concrete measures they are taking to improve call quality and network infrastructure. That pressure from Parliament means operators cannot simply ignore the problem much longer.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the PTA 4G LTE advisory about?

PTA released a 4G LTE advisory telling Pakistani mobile users to check three things: enable 4G mode in their phone settings, confirm their handset supports 4G, and verify their SIM card is 4G-ready. Doing all three can fix poor call quality without needing technical help.

How do I know if my SIM supports 4G?

The easiest way is to call your operator’s helpline (Jazz: 111, Zong: 310, Ufone: 333, Telenor: 345) and ask if your SIM is 4G-enabled. If it is not, most operators offer a free SIM swap at their service centres, and your number stays the same.

Which Pakistani network has the best call quality right now?

In PTA’s Q1 2026 voice performance survey, Zong ranked first with 88 compliant voice KPIs and only two non-compliant ones. Jazz came second with 86 compliant KPIs, followed by Telenor with 83 and Ufone with 78.

Does VoLTE help with call quality in Pakistan?

Yes. VoLTE (Voice over LTE) uses the 4G network to carry voice, giving much clearer audio than the older 2G/3G voice system. All four major Pakistani operators now support VoLTE, but you need a compatible phone, a 4G SIM, and VoLTE enabled in your settings. Check your operator’s website to confirm VoLTE is active on your account.
