Dubai is experimenting with artificial intelligence (AI) to improve air traffic control systems at its airports in order to increase efficiency. Saab, a Swedish aerospace company, has been awarded the contract for the Integrated Air Traffic Control Suite.

It’s being installed at Dubai International Airport, Al Maktoum International Airport (Dubai World Central), Emirates Flight Academy, and the Contingency Operations Centre right now.
The AI-powered system streamlines air traffic controllers’ work by consolidating critical radar and flight data. By automating specific tasks, it reduces their workload and increases safety.
Dubai intends to finish the implementation within a year. They also used advanced artificial intelligence to manage traffic flow in terminals and prepare for potential incidents.
Total Airport Management technology from Saab provides a comprehensive overview of airport resources, allowing for efficient personnel allocation and rapid response to emergencies. The system detects delays and signals the need for additional staff by monitoring the airport’s airside.
These technological advancements improve the overall passenger experience at Dubai’s airports by streamlining operations.
In addition, AI will also help in preparing for possible incidents and managing traffic flow in terminals, David said during Airport Show 2023, taking place at Dubai World Trade Center.
Saab’s technology will provide a detailed overview of airport resources, including the location of police, firetrucks, ambulance, and border control crew.
In the event of a mishap, the system will quickly locate and dispatch the nearest resources to the affected area.
It will also monitor the airport’s airside, sending alerts if more immigration and customs personnel are required to accommodate delayed flights.
DXB received 21.2 million passengers in the first quarter (Q1) of 2023, a 55.8% increase over the same period last year. This figure also reflects 95.6% of the airport’s pre-pandemic passenger traffic.
