We wrote last month on how Elon Musk slashed Twitter’s downloads after renaming the platform to X, and now we have specific data to put this loss into context.
Slashed Twitter’s Downloads
According to a new Apptopia survey, the extremely popular social app, which was previously a global hub for news and social updates, suffered a 30% reduction in downloads just 60 days following its contentious rebranding.

The X website, which still goes by the URL “twitter.com,” also reported a 10% decline in global traffic compared to August of last year.
Meanwhile, Twitter has been boasting of gaining 15-30 million members each month since 2011, but Apptopia statistics shows that the platform only added 10 million between September and August this year.
This is a big drop from last year, when the app only saw an 18% dip in downloads prior to Musk’s takeover of Twitter.
Dwindling Download Figures
The dwindling popularity of “X” goes beyond its original download figures. The software has also encountered difficulties in keeping users.
It had a robust daily active user base of 253 million in July, which had since dropped to 249 million by September.
1 Billion Monthly Users
A similar trend can be seen in the monthly active user base, which fell from 398 million to 393 million within the same time period.
These figures are a setback for Musk, who had previously stated his desire to achieve 1 billion monthly users by 2024.
While there was a spike in downloads and usage following Musk’s takeover in October, sustainable momentum appears to have eluded the company.
