Today, the rate of data generation around the globe is expected to exceed 325 million gigabytes per day. Screens are people’s top priority. So how long do we spend taking in its contents? A new study looked at the average amount of time people spend in front of screens worldwide to provide an answer to this issue. It’s more than you think, and probably more than any of us would care to admit.
The average screen time and usage report was compiled by Electronics Hub utilizing data from Sleep Cycle, a prominent sleep analysis app, and a global overview of the industry provided by DataReporting for the year 2023. Researchers were able to match the amount of screen time provided in DataReportal’s summary to the average number of hours users were awake thanks to the sleep data.
They spent a great deal of time to exploring the vast resources available on the web. The results showed that the average daily screen time for all users was 6 hours and 37 minutes. A user who spends more than 35–40% of their waking hours absorbed in electronic information is awake for 16–18 hours each day.
One may get a clearer picture of how people in different countries are using the internet by separating the data by region. The countries of South Africa ranked highest, with an average of 58.2% of each day spent in front of a screen. On average, people in the country with the lowest rate of use, Japan, spend just 21.7% of their waking hours in front of a screen.
The report then breaks down usage by country and activity to reveal top nations have the most users.
The next four countries with the highest proportion of time spent on phones were all in the top ten: the Philippines, Brazil, South Africa, and Thailand.
More than a quarter of a user’s waking hours in South Africa and Russia are spent in front of a screen. And when it comes to how much time people spend playing games, Saudi Arabia comes out on top.
People spend so much time in front of screens and generate so much data, but what kinds of data are they actually consuming? Exploding Topics reports that video (53.72%), social and social media (12.69%), and gaming (9.86%) are the top three daily contributors to the global footprint.
These figures suggest that services like TikTok, YouTube, Facebook, and video games account for almost 75% of all data usage.
Hazards of excessive screen time
Although it may seem like fun at the time, spending so much time in front of the screen has many drawbacks. Obesity, sleeplessness, cognitive abnormalities, and the emergence of new addictions are just some of the problems that have been linked to excessive screen usage.
There is also an unconsidered effect on the ecosystem. Web data necessitates server farms and other infrastructure that contributes to global warming. While some businesses are making efforts to lessen or offset their impacts, the real solution may be as easy as stepping away from their screens for a while.
