The Punjab government’s flagship housing initiative, Apni Chhat, Apna Ghar, has achieved a remarkable milestone, disbursing over Rs. 8.5 billion in interest-free loans to more than 9,000 individuals. This landmark achievement, announced on Sunday, reflects the program’s success under the leadership of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif. Within a few months, this initiative has set new benchmarks for microfinance in the province.
Application and Loan Distribution Numbers
The Apni Chhat, Apna Ghar initiative has received an overwhelming response, with 400,000 applications and supporting documents submitted through its online portal. In Phase I, 5,000 loans were issued, leading to the near completion of many houses. Phase II followed with 3,000 additional loans, and construction for these homes is actively underway. To ensure transparency, three independent microfinance institutions are verifying applications, safeguarding the program’s fairness.
Ambitious Housing Targets
The program’s ambitious goals include constructing 100,000 houses within a year and 500,000 homes over the next five years. These targets align with the Punjab government’s vision of providing affordable housing for its citizens. Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif’s commitment to addressing housing challenges has fueled this initiative’s rapid progress and widespread public trust.
How the Program Works
The program operates through the dedicated online portal acag.punjab.gov.pk, where applicants can access information and submit their loan requests. A helpline, 0800-09100, has also been established to provide guidance and resolve queries. Beneficiaries of the program receive loans of up to Rs. 1.5 million, repayable in nine years through monthly installments of just Rs. 14,000 making homeownership more accessible for low-income families.
