The S50 sedan will soon be introduced in Malaysia by Proton Holdings. The little car, known as the Geely Emgrand in China, will go up against the Toyota Yaris, Honda City, and other B-segment sedans there.
A CVT automatic transmission transfers the 114 horsepower (hp) and 147 Newton-meters (Nm) of torque produced by Emgrand’s 1.5-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine in China to the front wheels.
Roslan Abdullah, the CEO of Proton, said that a high-end model for Malaysia will have a 1.5-liter, 3-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine that produces 150 horsepower and 226 Nm of torque and sends power to the front wheels via a DCT automated gearbox.
The Proton X50 SUV and the sedan are both supported on Geely’s BMA platform. The S50’s launch date and pricing are uncertain, but rumors that it would replace Proton Preve have us anticipating a quick introduction in Malaysia.
Since 1999, Toyota has been selling the Yaris as a replacement for the Starlet and Tercel.
Up until 2019, Toyota has sold numerous Japanese-market models in export versions under the Yaris moniker, with the same cars also sold in select areas under the Toyota Echo name until 2005. The Vitz nameplate was discontinued in Japan in 2020, and the Yaris nameplate took its place.
