The Pakistan Navy’s Chinese submarine deal is moving ahead quickly, as Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Naveed Ashraf confirmed that the first vessel will enter service next year. The project aims to provide eight Hangor class submarines to Pakistan by 2028. According to Admiral Ashraf, the program is running smoothly and represents a major leap in Pakistan’s naval strength and modern capabilities.
Milestone in China Pakistan Maritime Ties
Admiral Ashraf told China’s Global Times that the launch of the second and third submarines earlier this year marked an important milestone. He said this success reflects the close partnership between China and Pakistan in the maritime sector. The submarines are designed to meet modern warfare needs and strengthen cooperation between the two nations in technology, defense, and regional stability.
Boosting Self-Reliance and Skill Development
The naval chief explained that the Hangor class initiative is not just about receiving advanced submarines but also about building local expertise. Under the deal, Pakistan will gain transfer of technology and skill training at Karachi Shipyard and Engineering Works. This collaboration will enhance Pakistan’s defense production abilities, create local job opportunities, and reduce dependence on foreign defense manufacturers in the coming years.
Frigates Strengthening Naval Operations
Admiral Ashraf highlighted that the advanced Type 054A P frigates also mark another successful example of China Pakistan defense cooperation. These powerful ships have already joined the Pakistan Navy and are known for their multi role performance. Equipped with cutting edge radar and missile systems, they are among the most capable surface combatants, enhancing the country’s readiness for complex maritime operations and regional security missions.
Expanding Strength in the Indian Ocean
The admiral emphasized that Chinese built frigates and submarines together have boosted the navy’s air defense, anti-submarine, and surveillance abilities. These assets play a crucial role in protecting trade routes in the North Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean. He said the region’s stability is vital for global economic movement, and Pakistan’s strengthened naval presence ensures continued peace and security in these important waters.
Major Progress in Long Term Defense Plan
Under the five billion dollar deal, four of the submarines are being built in China, while the remaining four are under construction in Pakistan. This structure supports local advancement and builds confidence in domestic defense production. Pakistan has already launched three submarines in China’s Yangtze River, a sign of real progress. The successful completion of this project will mark a new era in Pakistan’s naval power and strategic defense.
