The UAE Public Prosecutor has issued a statement discouraging the use of profanity and defamatory comments in online forums. Prison time and fines of up to $136,000 (AED 500,000) are possible punishments for offenders.
All types of electronic communication, including as social media and messaging apps, are subject to these rules.The Public Prosecution Service has stated that online trolls who harass and insult public servants while they are at work will face severe penalties. The penalties or jail time could be between 250,000 and 500,000 AED.
Federal Decree-Law No. 34 of 2021 addresses the suppression of electronic crimes and rumors, and Article 43 of that law addresses this specific offense.
UAE authorities launch “Waey” to increase public awareness
The authority has also started a new program called “Waey,” which aims to increase people’s familiarity with criminal law in the country.
Waey will provide initiatives including media education, legal counsel, and community participation to foster constructive behavior and an inclusive atmosphere.
It will also keep an eye out for any sort of harmful social behavior that could pose a threat to Emirati society’s core principles, and it will implement awareness-raising programs to counteract that behavior.
Waey will also make use of media and technology to get its message out to all segments of society, but especially young people.
