Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon recently revealed that the transport department has decided to make outdated buses illegal on Karachi’s highways.
He stated that the administration has informed all public transportation service providers in the city about the situation. According to Memon, the government has put a lot of money into improving Karachi’s public transportation system.
He also mentioned the People’s Bus Service’s development progress, adding that it will begin this month. “Work on the Red Line project, in conjunction with the Asian Development Bank, is well underway, and a proposal for the Blue Line project has already been submitted,” Memon noted.
He also indicated that the Orange Line BRT project is nearly complete and will begin operations in June. The project was intended to begin in May, however, it was pushed back due to a completion delay.
Although the Karachi Public Transportation Association has yet to speak out, indications are that they would fight against the government’s unexpected ban on outdated buses.
The project’s completion date had been scheduled for May 30 by Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Memon.
Former Sindh chief minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah inaugurated the Orange Line bus project in June 2016 to serve the 50,000 inhabitants of Orangi Town.
The Orange Line bus project will run for four kilometres between the Orangi Municipal Office and the Matriculation Board in Chowrangi. This system would employ a total of 20 buses.
