The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has introduced a digital birth and death notification system across hospitals and health centers in Pakistan. This initiative, developed with provincial governments, aims to simplify and modernize the registration process. Initiative Under Government Directives
This project follows the clear directives of Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, who emphasized the importance of strengthening Pakistan’s registration network. It falls under the National Biometric and Registration Policy Framework, which was approved by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in January. The government envisions a unified and trustworthy record system to ensure accurate national statistics and improved public services in the years ahead.
Pilot Phase Across Major Hospitals
Currently, NADRA is running the pilot phase of the project in more than 50 hospitals and health centers nationwide. These include well-known institutions such as PIMS, CDA Hospital, and Federal Government Hospital in Islamabad, Lady Aitchison Hospital in Lahore, and several major hospitals in Quetta, Gilgit, Hyderabad, and Mirpur. The success of this phase will determine the speed of the national rollout.
Focus on Accessibility and Inclusion
NADRA’s plan ensures that citizens from all regions can benefit equally. The digital system covers hospitals in Punjab, Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir. Automated System Simplifies Registration
The newly launched automated system sends birth and death notifications directly from hospitals and health centers to NADRA. Parents and legal heirs then receive mobile app or SMS alerts with details on how to complete registration at their local Union Council. This seamless flow of data reduces paperwork, saves time, and helps prevent delays or errors that often occur in manual processing.
Early Results and Achievements
So far, NADRA has successfully processed more than 4,000 birth notifications and around 407 death notifications through this new system. These early results highlight its potential to transform the entire registration landscape. The pilot phase, now active in three districts of Punjab, serves as a strong foundation for nationwide expansion in the near future.
Expanding to All Provinces
NADRA’s next step is to extend the digital notification system to all public and private hospitals across Pakistan.
