Due to a rise in wholesale pricing, the retail prices of veal beef—both boneless and with bones—have increased over the past 1.5 months to Rs. 900–950 and Rs. 1,100–1,200 per kg, respectively.
The Commissioner Karachi set the pricing at Rs. 750 and Rs. 900 per kg, but during Ramadan, traders didn’t adhere to the official price list. The cost of lamb has also increased to Rs. 1,700-1,800 per kg, with some markets selling it for Rs. 2,000-2,200 per kg.
Mutton was set to cost Rs. 1,400 by the Commissioner of Karachi, however it is not offered in the city.
Rise in Meat Prices
Retailers blame rising meat exports for price increases, yet in the first nine months of the current fiscal year (2022-23), Pakistan’s flesh export prices have stayed unchanged at $4,378 per ton.
In addition, Pakistan’s exports of meat and meat preparation rose to 69,072 tons ($302m) in 9MFY23 from 56,397 tons ($249m) in the same period last year.
In the instance of chicken, the price of the live bird and the flesh have increased during Ramadan to Rs. 430–470 and Rs. 700–780 per kg, respectively, as opposed to Rs. 400–440 and Rs. 630–650 before the holy month. Official prices for live birds and beef were set at 368 and 570 rupees, respectively.
