Imran Aslam, President of Geo and Jang Group, was laid to rest Saturday evening in Karachi at a cemetery in Defence Housing Authority (DHA), Phase 8, Karachi.
Family members, senior journalists, colleagues, and dignitaries from various walks of life attended his funeral.
Aslam, one of the country’s most experienced journalists, died on Friday at the age of 70. Aslam was being treated at a nearby hospital.
Aslam died in harness because, despite his illness, he showed up to work every day and worked as many hours as he could until he couldn’t anymore.
Last Monday, the senior journalist collapsed from multiple organ failure and was rushed to the hospital. According to his wife Fareshteh Gati, the only consolation was that he was not in pain because he was heavily sedated.
At 4 p.m., his funeral prayer was offered at his home.
The journalist was also The News’s chief news editor and senior editor. He also wrote over 60 plays, many of which were staged and broadcast on television.
Aslam joined The News as a news editor in Karachi when the paper first appeared in 1991, and he was one of the main minds behind the launch of Geo in 2002.
“Everything creative Team Geo did, either he thought of it, or had vetted, enabled, edited or enhanced it in some way,” says Mir Ibrahim Rahman, Geo TV’s Chief Executive Officer. His death prompted an outpouring of condolences from colleagues, politicians, and celebrities.
