After a successful trial program last summer, the Swedish furniture and home goods retailer IKEA said on Thursday that it will make its Buy Back & Resell program permanent throughout all 37 US shops on April 1st.
The service is exclusively for personally used Ikea furniture that is completely constructed and working, according to the business. Ikea will not accept any products that have been changed in any way.
Office drawer cabinets, sideboards, bookshelves, compact tables, multimedia furniture, cabinets, dining tables, desks and chairs, and stools without upholstery are among the products that can be returned.
Non-Ikea branded items, as well as beds, couches, mattresses, home furnishing accessories, leather products, lighting fixtures, and chests of drawers, are not included in the program. Any Ikea goods that have been recalled are likewise not eligible.
At participating Ikea locations, each item will be inspected for condition, age, and operation, and if it passes muster, consumers will get a store credit.
All “gently used” products certified for resale will be offered in a designated “as is” section in stores at reduced pricing, according to the business.
As part of its environmental effort, the furniture retailer already provides a buyback option in the United Kingdom and Ireland.
Customers may earn a store credit for up to 50% of the original retail price by trading in gently used Ikea goods in outstanding shape.
Items in “very excellent” condition receive a 40% credit, while “well used” items receive 30% of the original price.
Ikea has 465 locations across the world, and the program is part of the company’s goal to become a “circular” business by 2030.
The objective, according to the company, is to someday make items that are entirely constructed of recycled, remanufactured, reconditioned, or repurposed materials.
