Over 45% of freelancer respondents who were asked how long they had been in the sector for SEO professionals stated they had less than five years of experience. When you consider the reasons why so many people choose the freelance route in the first place, that number is not unexpected.
Finding full-time work in an in-house function or agency position might be difficult if you are not an industry veteran with a proven portfolio. Freelancing is a way to get the experience companies want in a sector without formal schooling.
How SEO freelancers find work and business
When we inquired about the channels that generate the most business, SEO consultants responded:
Network referrals (9.5%).
Search (8.9%).
Personal networks (8.7%).
Organic social (7.7%).
Upwork (7.7%).
Being an SEO freelancer is challenging, but there are opportunities.
It takes a strong person to work as a freelancer. Freelancers are expected to offer a wider range of services than other SEO experts in addition to being in charge of locating their own clients.
For instance, the sole task of reviewing the websites of new clients may fall to an SEO expert working with an internal team. On the other side, a freelancer can be asked to audit the website, identify ways to optimise it to get better results, and then put the strategy into action.
