The European Union (EU) Ambassador Dr Reena Kavinka met with Sindh Education Minister Syed Sardar Shah on Tuesday to discuss the rehabilitation of schools in flood-affected areas, for which the EU has approved 12.6 million euros.
The minister briefed Kavinka on the restoration of the affected schools as well as the challenges confronting the School and Literacy Department.
He stated that the floods had impacted the education of 2.5 million people, destroying 9,000 schools and partially damaging 11,000 others. In addition, he stated that approximately 5,000 schools were used as flood relief camps for the victims.
The EU ambassador assured the minister that the EU would provide all possible assistance in restoring education in Sindh, and that recruiting music teachers in Sindh would be a good practice. A grant of 12.6 million euros had been approved for school rehabilitation.
Before this approval, the European Union is disbursing nearly PKR 2.2 billion (EUR 10 million) to the Government of Sindh to strengthen the implementation of provincial education policies.
This was the second installment of a EUR 42 million grants made possible by European Union budget support through the Development through Enhanced Education Programed (DEEP).
This direct financial support accelerates access to quality education for all children in Sindh province, laying the groundwork for future training and skill development, as well as participation in productive employment.
