The Ethereum network is increasingly incorporating Zero-Knowledge rollups. ConsenSys and StarkWare, two software companies, are now offering StarkNet integration on both Infura and MetaMask.
“A Remarkably Significant Advance for StarkNet”
The two software companies are integrating StarkNet into Infura and MetaMask, bringing Zero-Knowledge rollup technology to two of Ethereum’s most fundamental pillars.
MetaMask is a popular decentralized, non-custodial browser wallet for Ethereum; Infura is a blockchain infrastructure provider.
StarkNet is a decentralized Zero-Knowledge Layer 2 Ethereum solution, which means it provides a side-chain for Ethereum protocols and users to operate on while avoiding costly gas fees (StarkWare believes fees will be 100 to 200 times cheaper).
According to the ConsenSys blog post, the benefits of building with StarkNet on Infura include low fees, high security, quick finality, self-custody, and a positive user experience. The integration was called an “incredibly significant step forward for StarkNet” by StarkWare cofounder Eli Ben-Sasson.
Meanwhile, MetaMask is now linked to StarkNet via its MetaMask Snaps system, which allows developers to connect the wallet to otherwise incompatible non-EVM networks, among other things.
The StarkNet snap allows MetaMask users to conduct StarkNet transactions without having to create new accounts. According to the blog, Infura is currently only making StarkNet available to a small number of users. Developers, on the other hand, have complete access to the MetaMask integration. It also warned users that StarkNet is still being tested and that “service interruptions may occur.”
