After delaying its planned return to the workplace until 2022, Google has guaranteed a $1,600 cash bonus to employees around the world.
Many prominent tech businesses, like Amazon, Facebook, and Microsoft, have given out top-up incentives in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, in an effort to help employees adjust to their remote working arrangements while also attracting and retaining talent in difficult times.
A leaked internal survey of Google employees earlier this year revealed that employee happiness was on the decline, prompting CEO Sundar Pichai to announce a series of additional wellness benefits, including a one-time company-wide holiday in March, a $500 cash bonus, and an extra “wellness” day tacked on to any four vacation days taken by Google employees.
In December, Google employees all across the world will earn the equivalent of a $1,600 bonus. This includes data centre providers and interns who are part of the company’s larger workforce. The representative did not specify how much the whole thing would cost Google.
The announcement comes after Google postponed its return to the US office for US employees beyond its initial deadline of January 10, 2022. The corporation also postponed its return to European, African, and Middle Eastern offices.
The IT giant will now review when locations should reopen next year, with local factors playing a role in the decision. Google employees in the United States have been able to work from home.
