YouTube Shorts Clear Screen mode is now rolling out to users, giving short-video fans a cleaner way to watch content without buttons and text cluttering the display. YouTube announced the update on its official blog on 25 June 2026, calling it part of a bigger push to build a more intuitive Shorts experience. The changes cover how you watch, how you control playback, and how you react to videos. For millions of Pakistanis who scroll Shorts daily on mobile data, these updates could make the experience feel noticeably better.

What is YouTube Shorts Clear Screen Mode?

The leading update is a new distraction-free viewing mode that expands videos to fill the entire screen. It is called Clear Screen mode, and enabling it temporarily hides all on-screen text, buttons, and other UI elements. The result is a clean, uninterrupted view of the video itself.

A single tap on the player hides every button and bit of text sitting on top of the video, leaving just the content. Tap again, and everything comes back. You can find the option in the overflow menu at the top-right corner of the Shorts player.

The feature should especially benefit videos with text overlays, recipes, tutorials, product showcases, and travel clips where every part of the frame matters. For anyone watching cooking videos or DIY guides on a small phone screen, this is a useful addition.

2x Playback Speed Comes to Shorts

YouTube also introduced 2x playback speed for Shorts, which the company described as one of the most requested features from the Shorts community. This is a big deal because the speed option has existed on regular YouTube videos for years but was missing from Shorts.

Users can activate the feature by pulling down on the screen while watching a video. Press and hold the edge of the screen and the video speeds up. Want it to stay at that speed for the rest of the clip? Swipe down while still holding the screen and it locks in.

Although playback controls have long been available for regular YouTube videos, they become more useful now that Shorts can be up to three minutes long. For tutorials, interviews, or explainer Shorts, being able to skip through at double speed saves real time.

Muting Gets Simpler

The update also simplifies muting Shorts. Users can now pause a video and tap the mute icon to disable audio. While it is a relatively small change, it makes watching Shorts more convenient in public places, offices, classrooms, or late at night without unexpected audio playing. For Pakistani users watching videos in shared spaces, this quick mute option is a welcome fix.

Heart Replaces Thumbs-Up, Dislike Button Goes Away

YouTube is introducing the heart icon to replace the thumbs-up, providing a more meaningful way to express when a video truly connects with you. The thumbs-up was always a flat signal. A heart, YouTube believes, better shows genuine appreciation.

Perhaps the most controversial change is the removal of the dislike button from the Shorts interface. The traditional thumbs-up icon has also been replaced with a heart, while the visible control stack has been reduced from five buttons to four.

To shape a better feed, YouTube is retiring the dislike button. Instead, it will rely on the more precise controls, “Not Interested” and “Don’t recommend this channel,” to more accurately tune your feed. These options give you more control over what you see and allow YouTube to better understand your genuine preferences.

The move follows YouTube’s 2021 decision to hide public dislike counts across the platform. While the dislike button remains available on standard YouTube videos, Shorts is now moving closer to other short-video platforms that primarily focus on likes, comments, and sharing.

For creators, the dislike count tracked in YouTube Studio will stop updating by the end of June. The old numbers will still be visible as historical data, but no new dislikes will be added going forward. Dislikes on regular long-form videos and live streams remain untouched. This change is limited strictly to Shorts.

Built-In Timer for Screen Time Control

YouTube is also introducing a built-in Shorts timer that lets users decide how long they want to spend watching short videos. The timer can even be set to zero, effectively blocking access to the Shorts feed. The feature arrives as platforms face increasing pressure to offer healthier digital habits. While it will not completely eliminate addictive scrolling, it gives users a built-in tool to better manage their screen time.

This is especially relevant for parents who want to set limits for younger family members. Google’s Family Link tools already offer some parental controls, and this timer adds another layer directly inside the Shorts feed.

How Fast Is the Rollout?

The latest update adds 2x playback speed, clear screen mode, new interaction options, and other interface changes for Shorts. The rollout began on June 25 and will expand gradually to users across supported devices. So if you do not see the changes yet, give it a few days and check for an app update.

The new Clear Screen mode removes all distracting UI elements by hiding all icons and text from the playback view. This is something that TikTok and Instagram already offer for their vertical videos, so YouTube is catching up. For Pakistani creators who compete on multiple platforms, having the same features across apps levels the playing field.

YouTube launched Shorts in 2020, and it has attracted quite an audience since then. YouTube Shorts was averaging 200 billion daily views as of June 2025, according to CEO Neal Mohan. With Pakistan’s mobile internet usage growing fast, a big portion of that traffic comes from this region.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I use YouTube Shorts Clear Screen mode?

Open YouTube Shorts, tap the overflow (three-dot) menu at the top-right of the player, and select Clear Screen. The mode temporarily hides all icons and text from your playback view for an immersive, distraction-free view of the content. Tap anywhere on the screen to bring the controls back.

How do I activate 2x playback speed on Shorts?

Shorts can now be played at double speed. Press and hold the edge of the screen and the video speeds up. Want it to stay at that speed for the rest of the clip? Swipe down while still holding the screen and it locks in.

Why did YouTube remove the dislike button from Shorts?

YouTube says a dislike can represent different things. It could mean poor video quality, an irrelevant topic, or simply content that does not match a viewer’s interests. Instead, the company wants users to rely on options like Not Interested, Don’t Recommend This Channel, and Report, which provide more specific feedback.

When will these Shorts features reach my phone?

According to YouTube, rollout has begun and the features will be rolled out over time, so that some users will have access to them before others. Update the YouTube app from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store to get the changes as soon as they reach your account.
