Huawei and Xiaomi, two of China’s smartphone behemoths, have joined forces.
They’ve put past conflicts aside and are now working on a global patent cross-licensing arrangement. This package will include some of the most cutting-edge technology, including 5G.
Huawei and Xiaomi cross-licensing Arrangement
Alan Fan, Head of Huawei’s Intellectual Property Department, expressed his excitement, stating that the agreement indicates the industry’s regard for Huawei’s telecommunications inventions. He stated that this will help the company’s future efforts in mobile technology research.
2 Technological Giants
These two technological titans have long been at conflict. Huawei, which leads the world in 5G patents, has sued Xiaomi over minor technical disagreements. All of it, however, is now history.
This agreement, according to Xiaomi’s General Manager of Corporate Business Development and IP Strategy, Xu Ran, is a symbol of mutual respect for each other’s technological contributions.
Luxury Smartphone Market
Both businesses are vying for first place in the luxury smartphone market, which is controlled by Apple.
Huawei’s most recent phones, the Mate 60 Pro series, are powered by the company’s proprietary Kirin 9000s chipset.
This not only impressed the local Chinese crowd, but it also demonstrated China’s technological capability in the face of US sanctions.
Xiaomi’s CEO, is a visionary
Meanwhile, Xiaomi’s CEO, Lei Jun, is a dreamer. He revealed his ambition to outperform Apple last month.
Over the following five years, he intends to invest more than $13.7 billion in technological development.
Xiaomi is also on a hiring binge, presumably hinting at building its own core smartphone technology. Over the previous ten years, Huawei has invested heavily in technological research and development.
It generated $560 million in patent royalties last year alone due to its extensive patent portfolio.
Both companies have previously negotiated similar agreements with major brands such as Ericsson, Oppo, Samsung, and Nokia. As market expert Amber Liu pointed out, such collaborations can only benefit customers.
