According to people familiar with the situation, Apple is reportedly ending its ten-year effort to produce its electric car, as reported by Bloomberg.
The Bloomberg report claims that Apple executives Jeff Williams and Kevin Lynch told the nearly 2,000 workers on the EV team known as the Special Projects Group about their decision.
According to the report, the majority of the staff members who were a part of the Special Projects Group will now work on generative AI projects at Apple’s artificial intelligence division.
Several hundred of them, including car designers and hardware engineers, may be able to apply for other open positions at Apple, according to Bloomberg. On the other hand, an unknown number of layoffs is also anticipated.
Apple recently revealed that production issues have caused the launch date of their car to be pushed back to 2028.
According to reports, the company decided last month to abandon its initial goal of creating a fully autonomous car in favour of a less ambitious design with fewer self-driving capabilities.
According to Bloomberg, Apple executives expressed doubts about the electric car’s profitability prior to abandoning the project.
Apple intended to charge roughly $100,000 for the car after investing hundreds of millions of dollars every year in the project.
