According to rumours, Apple plans to release improved versions of the iPad Pro and iPad Air in the coming weeks. Apple is breaking with convention by introducing two varieties of each model.
iPad Pro and iPad Air
In a first for the brand, the iPad Air will be available in two sizes, similar to the Pro series. The 11″ iPad Air is expected to have the same dimensions as its predecessor, while the new 12.9″ iPad Air will measure 280.6 x 214.9 x 6 mm.
The dimensions of the upcoming 11-inch iPad Pro promise a modest adjustment from its predecessor, measuring 249.7 x 177.5 x 5.1 mm rather than the current model’s 247.6 x 178.5 x 5.9 mm.
However, the projected 12.9-inch iPad Pro, set to be released this year, adds to the anticipation because its proportions differ somewhat from the iPad Air with the same screen size.
Surprisingly, while the new iPad Pro is expected to be slightly longer and wider, it has a slimmer profile—a departure from the Air’s previous association with slimness.
For comparison, the upcoming 12.9-inch iPad Pro is expected to measure 281.5 x 215.5 x 5 mm, as opposed to the current model’s 280.6 x 214.9 x 6.4 mm.
The significant reduction in thickness between generations is expected to improve the handling experience of such a large gadget.
According to sources, this slimming down is due to the Pro line’s changeover to OLED panels, which represents a significant shift in the device’s technological design.
As the anticipated release of the new iPads approaches, accessory manufacturers are ramping up production of protective cases in preparation.
While information about the internal hardware remain unclear, it is expected that the next iPad Pros will be paired with the M3 processor. However, it is unclear whether the Air versions will use the M3 chip or the M2.
Notably, it is unclear whether Apple would have a formal event to introduce these new gadgets or instead opt for a press release-only debut, as it has done in prior product releases.
