Stellantis finished the first half of 2022 in second place for European electric vehicle sales, outpacing Tesla in terms of volume and trailing only Volkswagen.
Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares stated: – “We are head on fighting for the top spot in terms of BEV (battery electric vehicles) sales in European market.”
During the first six months of the year, Stellantis sold 105,413 electric vehicles in Europe, while the VW Group sold 116,307.
Meanwhile, Tesla sold only 78,277 vehicles, hampered by Chinese lockdowns that impacted production at its factory there.
The Fiat 500 EV was the best-selling electric mini in Italy and Germany in the second quarter of 2022, according to Stellantis Group.
Stellantis sold 32,315 of the 500 EV in the first half of the year, a 72% increase over the same period in 2021.
Another important model was the Peugeot e-208, which was sold 21,918, or 11% more than in the first half of last year.
The hatchback was France’s best-selling EV, and its sister car, the Opel Corsa-e, sold well as well, with 13,380 units leaving dealerships.
Tesla’s quarterly sales fell to their lowest point in two years, owing primarily to factory shutdowns. Despite the difficulties, Tesla’s Model Y remained the greatest EV in Europe, with 39,969 sold in the first half of 2022.
The Model 3 was close behind, with 38,280 sales, a 25% decrease from the same period in 2021.
With the Covid restrictions lifted in China, the American EV manufacturer is expected to resurge in the second half of 2022.
Stellantis, on the other hand, was even stronger in the second quarter of this year than it was in the first, indicating that it is also gaining sales momentum.
Stellantis is working hard to take the European EV sales crown for the full year 2022, with key EVs such as the Peugeot 308 and 3008, as well as the Opel Astra on the way.
