Snap’s camera-enabled sunglasses, the Spectacles, were a flop. But now, Snapchat CEO Evan Spigel is taking the service to new heights with Pixy, a drone-powered camera that can hover around and record video and photographs for sharing on the app.
The Pixy flying cameras, which cost $230 each, are available “while supplies last” in the United States and France, according to the manufacturer.
Pixy was announced by Spiegel during Snap Partner Summit 2022, the company’s annual event for developers and other partners.
“It’s a pocket-sized, free-flying buddy for large and small adventures,” said Snap co-founder and CEO Evan Spiegel. “In the palm of your hand, you have all you need to capture the spontaneity and excitement of the moment from new viewpoints.”
Pixy has four pre-programmed flight paths and does not utilise controllers like other drones. “Simply choose a flight path and let Pixy handle the rest,” Spiegel explained. “The perfect new addition to your creative toolkit, helping catch fresh angles and making every moment fly,” he added of Pixy, which he describes as “the world’s friendliest flying camera.”
Pixy flying videos are wirelessly shared and stored in Snapchat Memories. After that, you may alter the captured video with Snapchat’s editing tools, Lenses, and Sounds, and then share it via Snapchat Chat, Stories, or Spotlight (or to third-party platforms).
The 3.6-ounce Pixy has a rechargeable lithium-ion battery and is 131.7mm x 106mm x 17.6mm.
