Teachers in Sindh will soon be able to take advantage of a new scholarship initiative established by the province’s education department. The media has been notified by reliable sources that the B. Ed entrance fee will be slashed in half for teachers from Sindh who enrol in a 1.5- or 2.5-year programme. The government will also increase the salaries of instructors who have earned a Bachelor of Education.
According to Fauzia Khan, the chief advisor and head of the curriculum for the Sindh Education Department, teachers would be able to pay their tuition in manageable installments if they wish to enrol in a doctoral programme. She also said that government school teachers will be provided with use of the new building.
The government also offers early promotions to educators with B. Ed. degrees and admittance to the Institute of Business Management University.
The cabinet of Sindh, Pakistan, made history earlier this month when it approved a policy of issuing licences to teachers for the purpose of protecting them from legal action. The education department in Sindh proposed the measure at a cabinet meeting presided over by Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah.
New strategy has incentives for Sindhi teachers
The new strategy is expected to see the Sindh Teachers Education Development Authority (STEDA) take over two existing teacher education institutions and establish a board to regulate teacher preparation and certification.
To qualify for certification as a teacher, candidates will need a Bachelor of Education or a Master of Education. Licentiates will be eligible to apply for government-announced Grade 16 teaching positions, but further education will be required for advancement.
A STEDA board, headed by the minister of education and featuring the education secretary and other high-ranking department officials, will be formed, so say our informants. The board will be responsible for providing teaching credentials and supervising the education and development of educators.
