Sindh Chief Minister (CM) Syed Murad Ali Shah announced a rain emergency in the province on Thursday and a half-day for all government and private offices in Karachi tomorrow.
On Wednesday, the Sindh Pakistan Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) issued an urban flooding alert and instructed deputy commissioners and all officials to take appropriate action.
According to the Met Department’s advisory, rain/thunderstorms with a few heavy rainfall are likely in northern areas of the province between February 29 and March 2.
Similar weather conditions are expected to prevail across the rest of the province beginning March 1.
“Heavy falls may generate urban flooding in low-lying areas. Fishermen of Balochistan are advised not to venture in deep sea till March 1 while those of Sindh are advised to remain careful during the forecast period,” it said.
Today, the Sindh chief minister presided over a discussion about the situation at the CM House. During the meeting, CM Murad agreed to declare a rain emergency in the province and place local institutions, the government, and hospitals on high alert, according to a statement released by his spokesperson.
Murad also declared tomorrow a “half-day” at all public and private offices in Karachi, and asked residents not to leave their homes unnecessarily.
He stated that rainfall was forecast in Karachi beginning at 2 p.m. tomorrow. “After 2pm tomorrow, three to four spells of rainfall have been predicted in different areas of Karachi,” the official said.
