Satluj Floodwater Reaches M5 Motorway Nearly 1.5 Lacs People Relocated

Nearly 150,000 people have been evacuated from multiple flood-prone districts of Punjab after water levels in the Sutlej River rose sharply. Acting on early warnings issued by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) launched extensive rescue operations. Authorities confirmed large-scale relocations in Bahawalnagar, Kasur, Okara, Pakpattan, Bahawalpur, and Vehari as rising floodwaters threatened towns, villages, and agricultural lands.

Bahawalnagar Witnesses Major Displacement

According to official figures, the Bahawalnagar district reported the highest displacement, with over 89,000 people moved to safer zones. Emergency shelters and camps were set up to accommodate evacuees while the local administration provided food and medical facilities. Families leaving their homes carried only essential belongings, fearing further damage to houses, crops, and livestock. Rescue teams continued their efforts in remote villages as water currents made accessibility difficult.

Evacuations Across Multiple Districts

Other districts also faced significant evacuations. Kasur reported nearly 14,000 residents moved to safer areas, while Okara recorded 2,063, Pakpattan 873, Bahawalpur 361, and Vehari 165. Authorities deployed boats and heavy vehicles to ensure quick relocation. Volunteers and community groups extended support, providing food supplies and logistical aid. The coordinated operation highlighted the importance of rapid response mechanisms in minimising potential human and economic losses.

Early Response Saved Thousands of Lives

Officials confirmed that around 40,000 residents had already relocated soon after initial alerts were issued. This proactive response significantly reduced casualties as floodwaters intensified. Timely communication between NDMA, PDMA, and local administrations proved vital in mitigating risks. The advanced relocation also helped reduce panic among remaining residents, ensuring smoother evacuation phases. Authorities noted that early warnings provided communities with crucial time to prepare.

Floodwater Approaches M5 Motorway

The flood situation intensified as rising Sutlej waters approached the M5 Motorway, raising concerns over potential disruptions in national connectivity. Authorities closely monitored the flow to prevent damage to vital infrastructure. Contingency measures were activated, including diversion plans and reinforcement of embankments. While traffic remained unaffected initially, officials advised caution and preparedness in case of further water rise, emphasising that protecting infrastructure was as critical as safeguarding residents.

Public Advisory and Safety Instructions

The NDMA issued strict advisories urging citizens to avoid unnecessary travel, particularly near rivers, streams, and low-lying areas. Residents were instructed to stay updated through TV, radio, mobile alerts, and the Pak NDMA Disaster Alert app. The public was further advised to move livestock to higher ground, avoid electricity hazards during floods, and strictly follow official safety guidelines. Compliance with instructions remained vital in preventing further casualties.

Relief and Rehabilitation Measures Underway

Relief efforts are ongoing as displaced populations seek shelter and assistance. Provincial authorities established medical camps to address health needs, especially preventing waterborne diseases. NGOs and volunteers distributed food packs and clean drinking water. Rehabilitation plans are under consideration to help flood-hit families return home once the waters recede. Officials emphasised the importance of long-term flood management strategies, including embankment strengthening and improved water regulation systems.
