Earlier this week, it was reported that Samsung was the target of a massive hack orchestrated by the infamous hackers group Lapsus$. It was only a report from Bleeping Computer at first, but Samsung has now confirmed the hack.
Internal company data and source code for software used on Galaxy smartphones were stolen by the hackers. However, Samsung assures that employees’ and customers’ personal information is still secure and that the company is working on countermeasures to the hack.
The hackers have not been identified by the Korean phone maker, but as previously stated, they are the same group that targeted Nvidia last month. These criminals stole proprietary information from the GPU manufacturer and threatened to leak it if their ridiculous demands were not met.
In the case of Samsung, the hackers stole 190GB of data, which was shared in a torrent in a Telegram channel on Friday. The source code for the bootloader and biometric authentication software used on Galaxy phones were included.
According to a spokesperson for Samsung, who spoke to Bloomberg, “Currently, we do not anticipate any impact on our business or customers. We have implemented measures to prevent further such incidents and will continue to serve our customers without disruption.”
