According to previous reports, Qualcomm will use Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company’s (TSMC) manufacturing process to produce the upcoming Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Plus chipset. According to a reliable source, Samsung may not mass-produce the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chips.
According to speculation, Qualcomm’s decision is likely due to the disappointing yield results that have plagued Samsung’s foundry.
With Samsung unable to provide a consistent supply of Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chips to Qualcomm, the natural reaction would be for Qualcomm to shift production of its latest chips to TSMC.
While the tipster does reveal that Samsung may also lose orders for the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor, there is no solid reasoning provided to back up these claims.
It’s no knowledge that TSMC makes superior processors with double the yield of Samsung, which is why Apple has been receiving shipments exclusively from the company for years.
Samsung’s rumored yield rate for its 4nm process is currently around 35%, implying that 65 out of 100 silicon wafers were not only discovered to be defective but were also likely to be rejected.
Meanwhile, TSMC is said to be manufacturing at a yield of over 70%, making it an excellent choice for Qualcomm. According to sources, Qualcomm is working closely with its new foundry partner to deliver the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Plus to market, which will replace the ordinary Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, the chip should be available shortly.
The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 is expected to be mass-produced on TSMC’s 4nm architecture. Aside from a previous rumor claiming that the upcoming chipset will support AV1, there is currently no information available.
