Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s Commitment to Combat
In a meeting at the Mini Secretariat in Islamabad, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s set forth the government’s resolute determination to address the critical issues of electricity theft, line losses, and inefficiencies in the power distribution system across the country. This meeting highlighted the Prime Minister’s unwavering commitment to reforming the energy sector, ensuring that the power distribution system operates efficiently and fairly.
The Power Minister and Secretary Power Division were given the responsibility of coordinating with provincial authorities to curb electricity theft, enhance the performance of Distribution Companies (DISCOs), and address other pressing issues in the sector. The provinces were also directed to ensure that police forces and Tehsildars are kept available as per the requirements of the DISCOs, emphasizing the importance of inter-agency cooperation.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also underscored the necessity of handling corrupt elements within the power companies strictly, advocating for radical measures against those involved in malpractice. To ensure accountability, he instructed the DISCOs to improve their response to public complaints, particularly those raised in kutchehris (public forums).
Additionally, the Prime Minister directed that the Steering Committee formed to oversee the transition of agricultural tube wells in Balochistan to solar energy should convene immediately. The meeting was informed that Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for this transition had been communicated to the committee. Furthermore, it was mentioned that a package is being prepared to recognize and appreciate officers who have shown commendable performance in their duties.
