Pakistan 5G users have crossed the 1.3 million mark across 23 cities, with more than 1,200 sites now active, and it all happened within four months of the first spectrum auction. The Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication (MoITT) and the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) confirmed the figures as operators continue adding sites and expanding coverage every week.

How Pakistan 5G Users Reached 1.3 Million So Fast

Commercial 5G services went live in March 2026 following the spectrum auction on March 10 that raised about $507 million and allocated mid-band frequencies to Jazz, Zong, and Ufone. That auction was Pakistan’s first ever 5G spectrum sale, and the speed of adoption since then has been notable.

Jazz and Zong launched commercial services within days of the auction closing. The expansion marks a big increase from July, when the PTA told the National Assembly that 5G services had reached 22 cities and only 449 sites. By mid-August, that number had jumped to over 1,200 sites across 23 cities, nearly three times the site count in roughly six weeks.

Which Cities Have the Most 5G Sites Right Now

The rollout is not spread evenly. Figures updated as of August 4, 2026 show that Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, and Faisalabad together account for 821 sites, or roughly 72% of the national total.

Karachi leads with 257 active 5G sites, with Jazz operating 119, Zong 111, and Ufone 27. This places it ahead of Lahore at 241 sites and Islamabad at 192 sites. Faisalabad follows with 131 sites.

But here is a number most coverage misses: Karachi’s Phase-I target stands at 1,000 sites, meaning current deployment represents roughly a quarter of the initial goal. So while the city leads the country, it still has a long road ahead before even its first-phase targets are fully met.

How the Three Operators Are Splitting the Work

Jazz continues to lead the deployment with 689 5G sites, giving it about 60.7% of the total. Zong follows with 338 sites, while Ufone has deployed 109 sites.

Jazz leads in several large cities including Lahore, Faisalabad, and Multan, while Zong has a particularly strong presence in Karachi and Quetta. Ufone’s deployment is smaller and remains concentrated in major markets such as Islamabad, Karachi, Lahore, and Rawalpindi.

The Gap Between Compatible Devices and Active Users

One important number that often gets buried: as of mid-July 2026, 3.81 million 5G-compatible devices are registered nationwide. Yet active 5G users stand at only 1.3 million. That means millions of people already own a 5G-ready phone but are not yet on a 5G plan or inside a coverage zone. As the network expands to more areas, many of those users could switch over quickly without needing a new device.

Local assembly of 5G smartphones is also growing, with brands like Samsung, Vivo, Oppo, Infinix, and Tecno manufacturing 5G phones in the country. Cheaper local assembly should bring 5G handset prices down, which will help more people get on the network.

What Speed Can You Actually Expect

This is the honest part. PTA Chairman Hafeez Ur Rehman told the National Assembly Standing Committee on IT that no new 5G infrastructure has been deployed yet, current 5G runs on existing 4G towers in a non-standalone rollout. This technical setup, known as NSA (non-standalone), means the network reuses existing tower hardware rather than building from scratch. This is why most users see little real speed improvement right now.

The first phase rollout guarantees a minimum download speed of 50 Mbps, and operators are also required to enhance 4G network speeds four to five times in areas where 5G is not yet active. That last point matters for the majority of Pakistanis who are still on 4G: even without upgrading, you may notice faster speeds in your area as operators improve their infrastructure to meet 5G licence conditions.

New dedicated 5G infrastructure is expected over the next six to eight months, with a full nationwide rollout planned across four phases over about nine years.

Challenges Still Holding the Rollout Back

The growth in Pakistan 5G users is real, but several bottlenecks remain. Fibre backhaul is a recognised problem, only a minority of cell sites across Pakistan were fibre-connected in recent assessments, forcing many towers to depend on microwave links that are less suited to 5G’s speed and latency needs.

Right-of-way delays, high capital costs, power reliability, and the need for denser small-cell deployments further slow progress. Device compatibility has improved since the early months, but affordable 5G handsets are not yet universal, limiting the addressable market.

PTA’s licensing framework requires progressive expansion beyond major urban centres, with coverage expected to extend to more cities as infrastructure is developed. The PTA has also said it is monitoring operators closely and will give periodic updates to the relevant government committee.

For context on the broader push behind this rollout, the ADB’s technical assistance grant for Pakistan’s digital economy reforms signals that international partners see this infrastructure expansion as a serious development priority.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many Pakistan 5G users are there right now?

Around 1.3 million people are actively using 5G services across 23 cities in Pakistan as of mid-August 2026, according to figures from MoITT and the PTA.

Which city has the most 5G sites in Pakistan?

Karachi leads with 257 active 5G sites, ahead of Lahore with 241 sites and Islamabad with 192 sites. However, Karachi’s Phase-I target is 1,000 sites, so it has significant room to grow.

Which telecom operator has the most 5G coverage in Pakistan?

Jazz has deployed 689 5G sites, giving it a 60.7% share of national deployment. Zong has 338 sites at 29.8%, and Ufone has 109 sites at 9.6%.

Is 5G actually faster than 4G in Pakistan right now?

For most users, the difference is not dramatic yet. The current rollout uses existing 4G towers in a non-standalone setup, which limits speed gains. Active 5G connections are expected to deliver speeds from 50 Mbps up to 1 Gbps in the best conditions, but real-world results depend heavily on how close you are to a live 5G site and whether fibre backhaul is connected. Dedicated 5G infrastructure is planned for the coming months, which should bring more noticeable speed improvements.
