To commemorate the 71st birthday of the great Moin Akhtar, Google Doodle has published an illustration by Hazem Asif, a Lahore-based artist. Akhtar was a “champion of everyday people” and largely considered as one of Pakistan’s greatest comedy actors, according to Doodle Archive.
Hazem told Doodle, “Never in my life did I think of working as a guest artist for Google Doodle or let alone designing a Doodle for the legendary Moin Akthar. I was not expecting it and when I was approached at first, I felt humbled and honored.
I had already decided that I will put all my heart and soul into creating a perfect tribute to celebrate Moin Akhtar’s birthday. Working on this project has been the most rewarding experience of my career to date.” He also shared his illustration on Twitter.
Moin Akhtar began his stage career at the age of 16 in Karachi, Pakistan, and rapidly became known for his excellent impersonations and side-splitting comedies. Akhtar became a household celebrity after a breakout appearance on a popular Pakistani chat program in 1966.
He was fluent in multiple languages and had a funny delivery in each of them. His commitment helped him maintain a four-decade career on stage and on television. Our greatest loss to laughter, Akhtar’s last words, as recorded in an interview with a famous newspaper agency were: “Everything I did is a part of history now. To live with history is difficult but there will be people, who will say one day, there was a man who did it and did it so differently.”
Akhtar, the master parodist and king of Urdu humor, the guy with a million identities but one identity and that of a great showman, was someone who could make you grin no matter how awful things were going in your life. So, here’s to Akhtar’s many faces and the smiles they provided to admirers all over the world, courtesy of Google!
