Nvidia, an American chipmaker, was recently targeted by a massive cyberattack that rendered the company’s internal systems inoperable for nearly two days. Nvidia has confirmed to The Verge, Bloomberg, and others that it is looking into the “incident.”
Hector Marinez, a spokesman for Nvidia, stated, “We are investigating an incident. Our business and commercial activities continue uninterrupted. We are still working to evaluate the nature and scope of the event and don’t have any additional information to share at this time.”
Even The Telegraph, which first reported the cyberattack, claims that no data was stolen or deleted from Nvidia. There is currently no evidence linking the cyberattack to the recent Russia-Ukraine conflict.
Russia has been invading Ukraine for three days, and cyberattacks have been part of the offensive. The infrastructure of the internet has also been targeted.
According to a “person familiar with the incident,” the “incident” was only a minor ransomware attack, according to Bloomberg.
If a major US-based company, such as Nvidia, is targeted by Russia, the consequences will be severe. It would elicit retaliation from America, as US President Joe Biden stated, “If Russia pursues cyberattacks against our companies, our critical infrastructure, and we’re prepared to respond.”
