Health officials advised against swimming on Friday after a 21-year-old died in Karachi with Naegleria fowleri.
People in the city have been going for swims to escape the heat as the temperatures rise, but Naegleria fowleri is a common problem because the pool’s lack of chlorine.
The young man who died from the illness resided in Karachi’s Defence neighborhood, according to Dr. Abdul Hameed Jumani, director of health in Karachi.
The 21-year-old reported having a fever after swimming at a private defense academy, according to Dr. Jumani. He was hospitalized on June 18 as his condition worsened, but he passed away on July 6 as a result.
“Because of this, people should be careful while swimming and ablution as well,” Dr. Jumani told a private news channel.
Naegleria Killed 5 People In Sindh
Five persons in the Sindh province have currently passed away as a result of brain eating amoeba, according to the Sindh health department. Four of the five cases were reported from Karachi, and one was reported from Hyderabad.
The free-living amoeba Naegleria fowleri causes primary amebic meningoencephalitis (PAM), a condition of the central nervous system that is typically found in water ponds.
