The Ad Hoc Ministerial Committee on Myanmar Accountability for Human Rights Violations against Rohingya met in Islamabad on March 22-23, 2022, on the fringes of the OIC Council of Foreign Ministers’ 48th session.
H.E Mr. Hissein Brahim Taha, the Secretary-General of the OIC, remarked that the committee’s meeting came at a vital time, in the middle of major developments in Myanmar’s case before the International Court of Justice.
This case, he said, sends a powerful statement to the world community about the Organization’s collaborative and coordinated efforts to protect the Rohingya people, as well as its steadfast commitment to global objectives and principles of justice and responsibility for human rights breaches.
He also stated that the Rohingya issue is a key priority on the OIC’s agenda, which the Organization has been pursuing for more than two decades.
Despite the efforts and calls of the OIC and the international community, the situation of the Rohingya has not improved, according to the Secretary General, who noted that Myanmar continues to turn a blind eye to the horrific violations of the Rohingya’s rights and has failed to meet its international obligations to create an environment conducive to the Rohingya’s willful, safe, sustainable, and dignified return to their homeland.
Furthermore, the OIC Secretary General lauded the Gambia’s essential role as the Committee’s chair in spearheading the Organization’s efforts on the world stage to ensure Myanmar is held accountable for the atrocities perpetrated against the Rohingya Muslims. He also praised Bangladesh for hosting and sheltering more than a million Rohingya Muslims.
