Drug-resistant (XDR) typhoid is on the rise in Karachi, with 335 cases reported in the last four months, according to a National Institute of Child Health (NICH) report.
XDR typhoid reported cases
According to the report, the city of Karachi had the highest number of XDR typhoid cases in April. In March, more than 80 cases were reported, 89 cases were reported in February, and 63 cases were reported in January.
It is worth noting that in 2022, 200,000 cases were reported in Sindh, including Karachi. Most antibiotics used to treat typhoid fever do not work against the strains (kinds) of Salmonella Typhi that cause it.
According to a recent study published in the American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene by a team of Pakistani and US researchers, genomic analysis of XDR isolates in Pakistan revealed that numerous XDR variants were circulating in the country. Since 2016, more than 15,000 cases of XDR have been reported in Pakistan, according to data.
