While the population waits for the load-shedding to finish, the power shortage continues to grow, indicating a bleak future unless prompt action is taken.
The Express Tribune learned on Sunday from sources in the Power Division that the electricity shortfall has surpassed 5,538MW, resulting in increased power disruptions in cities and villages.
As the mercury increases in the peak summer months, these frequent disruptions have made the public’s day-to-day existence miserable.
According to sources, the country’s entire electricity generation is 19,465MW, while the overall demand is 25,997MW.
They also stated that hydropower generates 4,662MW, while government thermal plants generate 1,060MW.
Unannounced load-shedding of eight hours is being carried out in various sections of the country due to a disparity in supply and demand.
Furthermore, in regions where high line shortage have been discovered, load-shedding has lasted up to 12 hours.
The incumbent government has struggled to overcome the chronic problem of power shortages since taking office.
Despite Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif‘s assurances that the crisis would be resolved as quickly as possible, the problem persists, with no end in sight.
Furthermore, since last month, South Asia has been experiencing a severe heatwave, with temperatures reaching 50 degrees Celsius in certain parts of Pakistan.
Climate change, according to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), is exacerbating the situation. It’s worth noting that Pakistan is one of the countries most sensitive to climate change’s effects.
