Google has just added extra functionality to Chrome’s Live Caption feature. This AI-powered tool works with Chrome and Google Meet on both mobile and desktop devices to deliver real-time captioning for any audio content. Among the new options are:
- An improved captioning window for Android tablets with Live Caption
- There is now a Live Caption for calls option, which will read your typed reply aloud to the other party during a call.
- Pixel 4 and 5 and other Android smartphones, including some Samsung Galaxy phones, include support for French, Italian, and German.
Want to give Chrome’s Live Caption function a try? Step by step, here’s what you need to do:
- Get yourself the most recent version of Google Chrome.
- Launch Chrome and select the “More” option from the menu that appears.
- To enable accessibility features, go to Preferences > Accessibility.
- Find the Live Caption option and flip the switch next to it.
- When this option is on, the caption can be modified to suit your needs.
When turned on, Chrome will display captions for any media that includes sound. Chrome will display the subtitles in real time no matter what you are doing where there is speech, be it watching a movie, attending a conference, etc.
Note, though, that Google uses AI for the captions, and there’s a chance they aren’t always appropriate given the variations in voice tone and pronunciation from person to person.
In addition to the enhancements made to Live Caption, Google has introduced a new typo detection tool for URL, which will be very helpful for persons with dyslexia and other related difficulties.
