To minimise any potential problems, the district administration of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Bannu has prohibited the transportation of gas in plastic bags.
According to a notification issued by the deputy commissioner’s office, Section 144 prohibits carrying plastic bags filled with natural gas.
The administration claims that plastic bags packed with petrol are walking bombs, and police should jail those who break the law. To avoid leaking, natural gas is injected into the bags using a small valve installed into the bag’s mouth.
The Bannu district in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province is well-known for its abundant natural gas and oil reserves, but the government has yet to establish a proper infrastructure system to distribute gas to local population and nearby areas.
Locals have devised improvised techniques, such as taking gas from a main supply line using a hose rather than drilling properly, and then filling plastic bags like helium balloons to take it from the field for use in home cooking.
