Despite the fact that most individuals have spent their whole lives using cotton swabs to clean their ears, the medical profession has made it abundantly obvious in recent years that this is not a recommended practice. It’s just not a smart idea since you might pierce your eardrum or push debris deeper into your ear canal. However, earwax doesn’t just magically evaporate, so occasionally you want to get it out as soon as possible.
That’s undoubtedly one of the reasons why a woman’s TikTok video about cleaning out her ears with hydrogen peroxide in August 2021 went viral.
Ayisha Friedman-Negrn (@ayishafrita) received 2.7 million likes as of October 2022 for a video she posted showing “how to properly clean our ears.”
Friedman-Negrn rests her head on a towel in the video with one ear pointed upward. She pauses a moment after applying a few drops of hydrogen peroxide to her ear. It will simply bubble within, she predicts. The earwax is really simply being separated, and when I flip, it will all fall out.
Friedman-Negrn did precisely what she said she would do: she covered her exposed ear with a towel, flipped her head over, and let the earwax to drain from her ear after waiting until “the sizzling has slowed down” (FYI: she meant “bubbling”).
