Artificial intelligence (AI) art is currently popular, but most AI image generators are cloud-based.
Stable Diffusion is unique in that it can be run on your own PC and generate as many images as you want. Here’s how to set up and run Stable Diffusion on Windows.
What Exactly Is Stable Diffusion?
Stable Diffusion is an open-source machine learning model capable of generating images from text, modifying images based on text, and filling in details on low-resolution or low-detail images.
It’s been trained on billions of images and can produce results comparable to those of DALL-E 2 and MidJourney. It was created by Stability AI and first made public on August 22, 2022.
Stable Diffusion lacks a clean user interface, but it has an extremely permissive license and, best of all, it is completely free to use on your own PC (or Mac.)
Don’t be put off by the fact that Stable Diffusion is currently only available as a command-line interface (CLI).
It’s fairly simple to get it up and running. You can have it running in a few minutes if you can double-click an executable and type in a box.
What Are the Requirements for Running Stable Diffusion on Your PC
Stable Diffusion will not run on your phone or most laptops in 2022, but it will run on the average gaming PC. Here are the necessities:
- A GPU with at least 6 gigabytes (GB) of VRAM is required.
- This includes the majority of modern NVIDIA GPUs.
- 10GB (approximately) of hard drive or solid-state drive storage space.
- Miniconda3 installation.
- The GitHub Stable Diffusion files.
- The Most Recent Checkpoints (Version 1.4, as of the time of writing, but 1.5 should be released soon).
- Installing Git.
- Stable Diffusion for Windows 8, 10, and 11 can also be run on Linux and macOS.
