The 2022 Update for Windows 11 was released on September 20, 2022. Known internally as 22H2, this update includes features such as File Explorer tabs, automatically generated captions for any audio content, Snap Layout enhancements, and performance and battery life improvements.
The majority of features are immediately available to everyone in all regions after installing the update. However, Microsoft warns that File Explorer tabs are not yet available, but will be in October 2022.
Furthermore, automatically generated captions are initially available for English in the United States but not for other languages or regions. For more information, see our guide to the top new features in Windows 11’s 2022 Update.
If you haven’t yet installed Windows 11, you’ll need to do so in order to install the update on your PC.
Because the update does not make any older PCs compatible with new update, you may need to purchase a new PC to use this, or follow the steps to install on.
As is customary, Microsoft is gradually rolling out the update to more and more Windows 11 PCs.
If it is available for installation on your PC, go to Settings > Window Update and look for a “Download & install” button next to the message “Windows 11, version 22H2 is available.” To install the update, click this button.
If the update has not yet been offered to your PC via Windows Update, you can download and run Microsoft’s Windows 11 Installation Assistant. Under Installation Assistant, click the “Download Now” button and run the downloaded file.
It will offer to automatically upgrade your PC to the most recent version of it, even if it has not yet been made available to you via Windows Update.
Warning: If you choose to download the Installation Assistant, you’re skipping Microsoft’s gradual rollout process and increasing the likelihood you will encounter bugs with the update on your PC. If you’re not prepared to accept that, you should wait until the update is offered in Windows Update, depending on how things go, that may be a few weeks or a few months after the release.
We’ve been running the prerelease version of Windows 11’s 22H2 on a few PCs for a few months now and have had nothing but positive results. Let us hope that this is a stable update with few issues.
