Biporjoy is the second storm of the 2023 North Indian Ocean cyclone season, following Mocha in the Bay of Bengal location. This cyclone has struck the western coast of the Indian subcontinent. On June 6 it developed into a cyclonic storm that is now headed for the Kutch coast. Over the previous few days, it has persisted as a cyclone over the Arabian Sea, making it one of the longest-lasting cyclones to hit India.
Implications of Cyclone Biporjoy
The name Biporjoy is a Bengali word for “disaster,” which is why it was chosen as the official name of the cyclone by Bangladesh. Following the rules established by the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO), cyclones are given their names.
