According to reports, both standard HBO and HBO Max gained 13 million additional customers in 2021. This includes a 3 million subscription increase in the previous quarter.
The information was released in AT&T’s most recent earnings report.
According to Vox, this gain comes after current world leader Netflix announced that it is losing members for the first time since 2011.
While the platform still has a significant lead over the competition with about 222 million paying subscribers, this is a clear indicator that HBO and other rival services are gaining significant momentum.
HBO’s subscriber increase last year was fueled by the “power of the content slate,” according to AT&T’s Q1 2022 report.
They didn’t explain what they meant, but according to a CNET report, this might be due to a variety of factors.
The platforms value lies in the fact that fresh episodes and material are released weekly rather than all at once, allowing viewers to binge.
Within the last five years, Netflix has developed a reputation for doing precisely that. One of their most popular original programmes in recent years,
“The Witcher,” is a prime example. They released all eight episodes of the first season at once in 2019, making fans wait two years for the second season – another all-in-one release that will need another long wait.
