To find ways to improve Pakistan’s supply chain resilience, a team of textile makers met with representatives from major international companies including H&M and Gap. The gathering coincided with the Sustainable Apparel Coalition Annual Meeting 2022, which is now taking place in Singapore.
Net Zero Pakistan, a project of the Pakistan Environment Trust (PET), hosted the meeting. A Pakistani delegation is scheduled to fly to Egypt for the 2022 United Nations Climate Change Conference a few days before the proceedings (COP27). Considering the severe floods in Pakistan this year that were caused by climate change, COP27 may be the most significant climate conference in Pakistani history. The recent climate calamity in Pakistan will be a major topic of discussion as the delegation to COP27 fights for immediate climate aid and makes the case for climate reparations to third world countries.
The Sustainable Apparel Coalition Annual Meeting is an important barometer of Pakistani private industry’s willingness to embrace the concept of net-zero in this setting. At COP27, international leaders will likely be sympathetic to Pakistan’s situation but will also call for Pakistan to reduce emissions. Given that a significant portion of Pakistan’s cotton crop was damaged by the floods earlier in the year, the textile sector will also be paying careful attention.
