The Federal Tax Ombudsman (FTO) has ordered the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) to make the proper policy decisions and work with the police and other LEAs to confiscate smuggled automobiles that are operating across the nation.
Reports on the estimated number of non-custom paid (NCP) cars operating in KPK were requested from the Secretary Revenue Division, Director General I&I Customs, and Chief Collector of Customs KPK over the course of the inquiry.
In accordance with the Economic Coordination Committee’s (ECC) decision and FBR’s instructions, the former Model Custom Collectorate (MCC) Peshawar submitted the exercise, with the necessary support from the provincial authorities and local administration of the recently combined Districts of KP.
It said that there were around 121,193 NCP cars as of October 2018; however, numbers may fluctuate given the prevalence of many unregistered automobiles and the ongoing smuggling of these vehicles in certain regions.
However, based on information from unverified sources, it is claimed that there are between 200,000 and 300,000 NCP cars in Malakand and other parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Additionally, the FTO ordered all Chief Collectors to implement tighter border controls to stop car smuggling at the point of entry into Pakistan and to ensure that vehicles crossing the border are successfully impounded by LEAs, confiscated appropriately, and promptly auctioned in accordance with the law.
