An eSIM and a virtual phone number solve two different problems, even though both are connected with how people use their phones. An eSIM replaces the physical SIM profile and connects a device to a mobile network. A virtual phone number gives you another number for calls, messages or online services without requiring another physical SIM.

For Pakistani smartphone users, the distinction is becoming more relevant as eSIM services expand and people use their phones for work, travel, online accounts and international communication.

What Is an eSIM?

An eSIM is a digital SIM built into a compatible smartphone, tablet or other connected device. Instead of inserting a plastic card, the user downloads a carrier profile and activates mobile service on the device.

It still connects the phone to a carrier, just without a card in the SIM tray. Depending on the plan, the connection can provide mobile data, calls and SMS just like a physical SIM.

Many recent iPhones, Samsung Galaxy models, Google Pixel phones and other devices support eSIM. Support still varies by model and region, so checking the exact device before buying an eSIM plan is a sensible first step.

For Pakistani users, eSIM is becoming a more practical option as local operators expand support and PTA changes the rules around digital SIMs. In July 2026, PTA confirmed that users can transfer an eSIM between compatible phones free of charge up to 10 times. The regulator is also working with operators to reduce eSIM issuance costs.

How Does an eSIM Work?

An eSIM does not create a separate type of mobile network. It uses the same cellular infrastructure as a physical SIM.

After purchasing a compatible plan, the user normally receives activation instructions, often through a QR code. The phone downloads the carrier profile and stores it securely.

Dual-SIM phones make eSIM particularly practical. A user can keep a regular SIM for a main number and add an eSIM for another network or a temporary data plan. On supported devices, the user can choose which line handles calls, messages and mobile data.

For a Pakistani user, the process for a local operator can differ from that of an international travel eSIM. Local activation may involve identity and biometric verification, while a travel eSIM bought online may use QR-code activation without providing a local Pakistani number.

What Is a Virtual Phone Number?

A virtual phone number is a separate service from an eSIM. It is a phone number provided through an online platform rather than being tied directly to a physical SIM card inside the phone.

Depending on the provider, a virtual number may support incoming SMS, calls, voicemail or a combination of these services. Some services offer numbers from specific countries, which can be useful for people who communicate regularly with international customers or contacts.

Freelancers may want a separate number for clients. Small companies can use virtual numbers for sales or support teams. Someone working with customers abroad may want a number associated with a particular market while keeping a personal Pakistani number separate.

Services such as eSIM Plus may offer virtual numbers alongside mobile connectivity, but the exact features depend on the selected number and plan. An SMS-only number is not the same as one that supports incoming and outgoing calls.

eSIM vs. Virtual Phone Number

The easiest way to separate them is to look at what each one actually gives you.

An eSIM provides mobile network access. It replaces the physical SIM profile and can provide cellular data, calls and SMS when included in the plan.

A virtual phone number provides a phone number and communication service. It does not necessarily provide mobile data or direct cellular network access.

A Pakistani traveler visiting the UAE could use an eSIM for mobile data while keeping a primary Pakistani number active for important calls. A freelancer could use a virtual number for overseas clients while continuing to use an existing SIM for personal communication.

They can work together, but one does not replace the other.

Why People Use Both

A traveler can use the eSIM for mobile data while keeping a separate number for work calls and messages.

A Pakistani professional travelling to Europe could keep a regular SIM for existing contacts while adding a travel eSIM for local data. If the same person works with overseas clients, a virtual number could provide a separate business contact number.

This setup can also reduce the need to carry several physical SIM cards or separate phones. Personal calls, business communication and mobile data can be handled through different services on one device.

There are limits to keep in mind. A virtual number may not receive every SMS sent by every service. Some banks, financial platforms and online services restrict VoIP or virtual numbers for verification. Check the provider’s supported features before relying on one for an important account.

Practical Uses for Travelers and Remote Workers

Travel is a straightforward example. A user can install the eSIM before leaving Pakistan and have mobile data ready after landing instead of searching for a local SIM immediately.

For remote workers, mobile data can come from an eSIM while a virtual number handles business calls or messages. That separates internet access from the phone number used for work.

Small businesses can use virtual numbers for different markets or departments. A company based in Pakistan that deals with customers overseas, for example, may want a separate contact number for a particular market without changing its main local number.

The same setup can suit freelancers, online sellers and consultants who need to keep personal and professional communication apart.

What Pakistani Users Should Know

Pakistan’s mobile market has specific SIM registration rules that do not necessarily apply to international eSIM and virtual-number services.

For local mobile numbers, SIM registration is linked to the user’s identity and PTA requirements. New SIM activation currently requires biometric verification through NADRA’s system, while PTA and NADRA are working on plans that could move more verification onto the Pak ID platform.

A Pakistani operator’s eSIM therefore follows local registration requirements. An international travel eSIM is different and may only provide mobile data.

Device registration matters too. Pakistani users bringing an imported phone should check its PTA status before relying on cellular service. eSIM support alone does not remove the device’s registration requirements.

Before purchasing a plan, check three things: whether the phone supports eSIM, whether the device is unlocked and properly registered where required, and whether the plan provides data, calls, SMS or only one of those services.

Security and Privacy

A second number keeps a work line separate from the number family and friends already have, but it should not be treated as a guarantee of anonymity.

Use reputable providers and protect account passwords, activation QR codes and recovery information. Never share an unused eSIM QR code publicly.

If a virtual number is used for account verification, losing access to that number can create problems when an account later asks for another code. For banking and other critical accounts, check whether the institution accepts virtual numbers before relying on one.

Common Limitations

The first thing to check with an eSIM is compatibility. Not every phone supports it, and some regional versions of similar devices have different SIM capabilities.

Virtual numbers have different restrictions. Some cannot receive short-code messages, bank OTPs or verification messages from particular platforms. Others may expire if the user stops paying for the number.

Network coverage also matters. An eSIM is only useful if its underlying carrier has service in the area. A virtual number does not solve poor mobile coverage because it is not a replacement for cellular data.

For most users, the choice depends on what they need from the phone. An eSIM is the better fit for mobile data and network access, while a virtual number is useful when a separate number is needed for calls, messages or work. Pakistani users should also check device compatibility, PTA requirements and the exact features included in a plan before making the switch.
