To improve road safety, Dubai has installed 14 AI-powered pedestrian crossings. These pedestrian and cyclist crossings in DU Silicon Oasis use artificial intelligence to activate warning signs and traffic signals for vehicles as pedestrians and cyclists cross.

The initiative, carried out in collaboration with AI traffic tech developer Derq, is in line with DU’s smart city goals. Before going live, the Real-Time Perception and Connectivity AI Platform was tested for two years.
Derq co-founder Georges Auoude emphasized the project’s alignment with DU’s bicycle-friendly goals. Muammar Al Katheeri of the DU Integrated Economic Zones Authority highlighted the partnership’s progress in pedestrian safety.
At these crossings, the AI system detects and tracks vehicles, giving drivers time to slow down. Alerts and durations can be set to be active for a set period of time or until pedestrians leave.
The platform, which is equipped with high-speed 5G, collects traffic data and operates remotely.
The UAE launched Salamah 365, a project to address traffic accidents, floods, and pedestrian safety. There will be interactive warnings on accident-prone routes, as well as dam and valley flood monitoring.
Abu Dhabi Police Department implemented solar-powered road alerts with colored lights visible from 200 meters away.
Blue and red lights indicate incidents, while yellow lights indicate inclement weather. Solar-powered alerts that are visible day and night improve safety.
